The final stop on our winter trip to Hakone was the volcanic area created by the eruptive activity of Mount Hakone.Owakudani」。

Formed by a massive eruption approximately 3,000 years ago, this area still boasts one of Hakone's most dynamic landscapes, with white steam rising from the ground and the scent of sulfur enveloping the surrounding area. The rugged, exposed rock faces and the continuously erupting steam create a sight that makes you acutely aware that nature is still alive and in motion.

There's a huge difference in crowds between weekdays and weekends, and it's especially crowded on weekends and during long holidays. You might have to wait 30 minutes to an hour to park your car, so it's recommended to visit with plenty of time to spare.

On days with clear weather, you can even see the majestic Mount Fuji beyond the plume of smoke, creating a unique and breathtaking view where the power of the volcano and the beauty of Japan's iconic mountain come together—a charm unique to Owakudani.

On this day, we were hit by the strong winds typical of Owakudani in winter, and for the first time, I experienced the sensation of my body floating. Faced with the power of nature, an extraordinary experience awaited us that was so surreal it made me laugh.

At Owakudani, you can observe the unique natural environment of a volcanic region along the paths permeated with the smell of volcanic gases, and learn about the formation of the volcano in detail from explanatory signs placed throughout the area. There is also a guided tour, by reservation only, of the "Owakudani Nature Research Trail," which is approximately 700 meters long and takes you close to the fumarole area.

This 700-meter-long adventure prioritizes safety and follows the instructions of the supervisors.

Experience the breath of Hakone Volcano as smoke rises from the volcano.

The newly installed observation facility, "Ibuki no Deck," allows visitors to experience the fumarole area of Owakudani up close. Its open design features glass floors and railings, creating an unobstructed view that extends all the way to your feet, giving you the feeling of floating above the earth. While you can safely experience the rising steam up close, the sheer power of the experience is beyond imagination, making it a place where you can truly feel the "breath of the earth."

Unlike its tranquil touristy appearance, Owakudani in winter presents a harsh yet majestic face. On the deck, buffeted by strong winds, gusts of wind strong enough to blow you away await you if you're not careful. It might be a place that truly deserves the word "life-threatening." I'm desperately holding onto my beret to prevent it from flying off, hence this expression (lol).

The landscapes where volcanoes thrive are filled with a power that can never be conveyed through images alone.

The weather at Owakudani changes very quickly; the clear skies from just moments ago vanished in an instant as clouds rolled in.

The Hakone Ropeway's Owakudani Station was renovated on April 25, 2025, with the first floor of the station building and the station plaza being completely refurbished. A new spot called "Chikyu no Tani" (Valley of the Earth) has opened, allowing visitors to experience the scenery of Owakudani up close from the ticket gate area.

Unable to withstand the strong winds that threatened to blow me away, I took shelter inside a building. It's a shame that the image can't fully convey the tremendous wind pressure.

The Hakone Ropeway is a sightseeing ropeway that connects the mountainous region of Hakone from the air, and its greatest appeal is the opportunity to experience the dynamic landscape formed by volcanic activity up close from above. If you board at "Sounzan Station," "Owakudani Station" is one of the stops you pass through and can be said to be the highlight of the ropeway.

At "Tani no Marche," a shop selling sweets and drinks inspired by the "valley of the earth," as well as limited-edition goods and souvenirs full of Hakone's charm, you can choose your souvenirs before you leave.

"Oowakuda-ni Tamago"
"Owakuda-ni TAMAGO" is inspired by the famous "black eggs" of Owakudani, which are said to extend your life by seven years if you eat them. The black color comes from squid ink. These boiled eggs are packed with rich flavor and umami, making them a satisfying treat. Perfect as a snack or with drinks, and with a long shelf life, they're sure to become a new must-have souvenir from Owakudani!

Under the crisp winter air and blue sky, I snapped a photo of my beloved Porsche 911 Carrera in the parking lot with the sacred Mount Fuji in the background.

Owakudani is a place where you can feel the breath of life and the pulse of the earth. In exchange for the harshness unique to winter, the overwhelming scenery and experiences that can't be found anywhere else were deeply etched into my heart at the end of my trip. Mount Fuji, which appears beyond the plume of smoke when the clouds part, has a quiet and unwavering presence, in stark contrast to the rugged volcanic landscape. Its majestic appearance makes you realize once again that this is one of Japan's most representative scenic spots. It is a place that makes you feel the profoundness of Hakone once again. And I would like to return to Hakone, where I can always have new experiences.
