Mie/Ise "Akabuku Main Store" White Mochi and Black Mochi! Eating and drinking with my dog from Oharai-machi to Okage-yokocho -Souvenir Edition ①-

Oharaimachi StreetOkage YokochoThe shop is located next to the Shinbashi bridge in front of the entrance.Akabuku Main StoreFounded in 1707 (Hoei 4), the company boasts a long history and sells Akabuku mochi, the quintessential Ise specialty, as well as the limited-edition Akabuku mochi, "Shiromochi Kuromochi" (white mochi and black mochi).

Akabuku mochi is a rice cake confection that was created approximately 300 years ago. Each mochi is carefully made by artisans called "mochiiresan," with smooth red bean paste placed on top of the rice cake. Three lines are added to the red bean paste to represent the clear waters of the Isuzu River, and the white rice cake represents the pebbles on the riverbed. The name Akabuku is said to have been derived from two characters of the phrase "sekishin keifuku," which means "to rejoice in one's own and others' happiness with a sincere heart like that of a baby."

In addition to selling souvenirs, the store also has seating, and the "Akabuku Bon (2 Akabuku mochi)" for 400 yen, which includes freshly made Akabuku mochi served with hojicha tea, is extremely popular! The summer-only "Akabuku Ice" is sold at the "Akabuku Main Store," "Akabuku Naiku Branch," "Akabuku Isuzugawa Store," and "Okage Yokocho Dangoro Chaya."

While enjoying Akabukumochi and taking a break with hojicha or matcha is highly recommended, if you're taking a short break with your dog, please use the terrace seating at the Akabukumochi Main Store. This time, instead of the standard Akabukumochi, we purchased the limited edition "White Mochi Black Mochi" as a souvenir.

Depending on the time of day, the souvenir shop at the Akabuku Naiku-mae branch is less crowded than the main store, so you can also purchase items there.

Limited edition Akabuku "White mochi and black mochi / 8 pieces" 1,100 yen

Kuromochi is a simple rice cake with a brown sugar flavor that was made from the Hoei era through to the Meiji era.
Shiro Mochi is a rice cake that embodies the purity of white adzuki bean paste, a recipe developed from the Heisei era to the Reiwa era.

Unlike the familiar Akabuku mochi that we usually eat, these come in two varieties: the elegant "Shiro Mochi" made with white adzuki beans and a gentle sweetness, and the "Kuro Mochi" with the rich, impactful sweetness of brown sugar. This was my first time trying the limited-edition Akabuku, and my husband and I both savored the refined taste of the "Shiro Mochi," enjoying a truly comforting experience. Which Akabuku do you prefer: red, white, or black?
