If you turn onto Futamata Street from Yanagi Street and drive towards Motohama, you will see "Kappo ShinhamaThe sign reads "Shin-Hamaya Fish Shop". Founded in the early Meiji period as "Shin-Hamaya Fish Shop", the current owner isMitsuhiro NagataniMr.4th generationIt has become a beloved spot for regulars and is bustling with customers day and night. The restaurant has a spacious interior with 6 counter seats overlooking the kitchen, two tables for 6 people each, a private room with 4 table seats, and a tatami room with a sunken hearth that can accommodate up to 20 people. Deep-fried small fish, homemade pickled plums and shallots, and other ingredients are displayed on the counter, making it a pleasure just to look at them. The owners have been in the fish business for generations, and they are committed to providing delicious, fresh fish at reasonable prices, so they always personally select the ingredients. At Kappo Shinhama,Daily Lunch SpecialBut800 yenAnd you can enjoy it at a very reasonable price. It's loved by regular customers, and apparently many people come every day because the menu changes daily. This time, I ordered the daily special lunch (main dish, 2 side dishes, rice, miso soup, pickles) for 800 yen♪

As I sat down in my usual counter seat, the owner, Mr. Nagatani, greeted me with a big smile. He was in the middle of cutting a huge 3L-sized watermelon, and when I immediately said, "Wow! I want to eat some!", he replied, "I'll chill it for dessert!" and carefully removed each seed one by one. Apparently, this huge watermelon had been prepared for a watermelon-breaking game at a children's summer festival, but it was canceled due to a typhoon, leaving it with nowhere to go. But the watermelon ended up happily in the stomachs of Shinhama's customers, and all's well that ends well!

"Daily Lunch Special" 800 yen

Today's special is salmon meunière. The salmon, coated in batter and pan-fried, makes a great side dish to go with white rice!

The side dishes for the daily lunch special are "Deep-fried eggplant marinated in sauce" and "Seared tuna and amberjack with sesame sauce."

One of the great things about set meals is that you always get to enjoy at least two small side dishes. The gently seasoned seasonal eggplant and fish dish are soothing and comforting to the stomach.

"Medium fatty tuna"

Thanks to Mr. Nagatani's generosity, we got a little extra medium fatty tuna! (So happy!) "With this, you can have another bowl of rice~♪" Mr. Nagatani whispered, tempting us (lol). It was a sweet temptation for us who are on a diet, but we didn't go for seconds! We enjoyed the melt-in-your-mouth medium fatty tuna with a refreshing touch of wasabi♪

Daily lunch set: "Rice, miso soup, pickles"

Here, the set meals are always warm and comforting, like home cooking, and the rice is so delicious that you end up eating too much and forgetting to stop at 80% full!

Dessert: Watermelon

As we were finishing our meal, Mr. Nagatani brought out a watermelon that he had kept chilling in the refrigerator, served in a glass bowl on top of crushed ice – it looked so refreshing! As I was enjoying the incredibly sweet watermelon, Mr. Nagatani kept bringing out more and more, from yellow watermelons to cantaloupes (I was already full! lol). Apparently, his neighbors who are farmers and his customers always leave various vegetables and fruits at his shop! I'm sure those who leave them think, "They'll be cooked deliciously here!" and are trying to avoid wasting any food. It's because of Mr. Nagatani's generous spirit that such kind customers gather around him, I'm sure! Mr. Nagatani, I'll be back again soon!
