A long-established, purely Japanese-style inn founded in 1926 (Showa 1)Wami no Yado KakujoroKakujoro is a compact, luxurious, long-established inn with only 10 guest rooms in total: 5 rooms in the main building "Kakujoro," 2 rooms in the new building "Unjoro" which was added in 2005, and 3 rooms in the separate villa "Suijoro"!
Since we checked in early, we were given a tour of the hotel facilities. Before heading to our room in the annex, "Suijoro," where my husband and I would be staying, we were also given a tour of the main building's guest rooms, which retain much of their original character from when the hotel was founded!
On the first floor of the main building, which is built surrounding the main building's courtyard, "Dream Terrace," there is a dining area with only counter seating overlooking the courtyard, offering a luxurious space where you can enjoy breakfast and dinner while taking in the lush green scenery!
As you ascend the grand staircase made of zelkova wood, which has weathered beautifully and developed a rich patina over time, you'll find yourself in the second-floor landing. Reflected in a mirror bearing the name of "Kabuto Beer," known as one of the five major beers of the pre-war era, you'll feel the warmth of the Showa era, and along with the sound of the pendulum clock, you'll feel as if you've traveled back in time!
Beyond that lies the main building's terrace, exuding a traditional Japanese atmosphere, where you can relax in a comfortable spot with low chairs, overlooking the courtyard through the glass windows!
Open the glass windows and enjoy some reading time while feeling the early summer breeze! You can also enjoy a quiet moment while browsing through travel books featuring Japanese inns and hotels selected by the innkeeper, who loves to travel, or local newspapers full of delicious gourmet food!
On the second-floor hallway is a traditional tiled sink! The water is currently turned off, and it looks like it's become part of the interior design, but the old-fashioned metal washbasin fits in perfectly!
Main building, 2nd floor guest room [Hagi]
Among the guest rooms in the main building, the most famous is this room, [Hagi]!
The room in [Hagi] was used in the Shochiku film "Fishing Fool's Diary 2This room served as the setting for the film, and a photograph capturing the filming scene at the time is displayed in the Japanese-style room!
Toshiyuki NishidaYou can see the hilarious naked dance of the main character, Hama-chan, or Densuke Hamasaki, played by [Name of actor], and the cleaning lady, who has worked at this inn for a long time, told us what she knew about the time!
Also, on the bedroom wall, there is a picture of the actor who played the role of Su-san, or Ichinosuke Suzuki, the president of a construction company in the "Tsuribaka Nisshi" series.Rentaro MikuniCalligraphy by [Name] is on display.
The single character "華" (hana), written in truly beautiful and skillful calligraphy, is recognized!
This room features a 10-tatami mat Japanese-style living space, an 8-tatami mat Japanese-Western style bedroom with a low bed, and a spacious veranda overlooking the courtyard, creating a comfortable and inviting living area!
Furthermore, the open-air bath, which was renovated in 2005 and now features a large 1500mm square bathtub, will allow you to stretch out and enjoy a relaxing soak!
Main building, 1st floor guest room [Kiri]
While not completely barrier-free, the Japanese-Western style room [Kiri], which features universal design elements to accommodate wheelchairs, is highly recommended for elderly guests!
Upon entering, you'll find a 6-tatami mat room with a traditional Japanese hearth, offering a relaxing space overlooking the courtyard!
At the back of the 4.5-tatami mat Japanese-style room, there is a small, oval-shaped cypress wood indoor bath.
The 6-tatami mat bedroom is furnished with two spacious beds, one double and one single, ensuring a restful sleep!
The main building has a total of five guest rooms, and each of the other rooms is uniquely designed, so you can enjoy a different atmosphere no matter how many times you visit!
