This is Thailand's first paved road, built by King Mongkut, Rama IV, over a period of three years from 1861 to 1864.
The street name "Charoen Krung," meaning "prosperity," was given by King Rama IV.
Before that, it was also called the "New Road," and Thailand's modernization began with this road.
